Bugula landing site in Katosi town council, Mukono district in Uganda on the shores of Lake Victoria has a population of about 600 people most of which are women and youth. The main economic activity is fishing which is heavily monitored by regional Fisheries Protection Unit because its alleged that residents engage in illegal fishing practices. For this case women unemployment is high.
Waste to Energy Youth project under WEYE Clean Energy funded by Katosi Women’s Development Trust held a Bugula Women Waste to Wealth training workshop on the 23rd to 24th of January 2019. Eighty three women from four landing sites that is Bugula, Muvokasali, Kibanga and Nangoma attended this workshop which was meant to address the following concerns;
1.Poor Sanitation
The first day of the training focused on sorting of waste and how it could be valuable if well sorted and managed.
2.Poverty
Properly sorted waste such as used plastic bottles, polythene and organic waste is a potential source of income. Used plastics and polythene can be sold and organic waste can be used for making charcoal briquettes.
3.Environmental degradation
This concern was approached through encouraging use of charcoal briquettes made which substitute ordinary charcoal and firewood which in turn saves forests around them.
Solutions to the challenges above help residents generate more income while protecting the environment and ensuring proper sanitation.
